In Our Hearts Forever

Notre Dame and Its Servicemen Who Died in World War II
&

World War II was one of the most consequential events in human history. The military conflict across the globe was accompanied by profound political and social upheavals, changing the world forever. Against this background, the University of Notre Dame responded to our nation’s mobilization with significant changes to its mission and operations, supporting the war effort as well as ensuring the school’s survival. For its part, Notre Dame graduates and students answered the call of duty and provided soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines to our military.

This book memorializes the 331 known Notre Dame servicemen who died in the line of duty while serving in the armed forces of the Allied nations. In these 533 pages, we are reminded of the best Notre Dame has to offer.

Testimonials

The dedicated men included in this volume deserve our remembrance and our gratitude.
Rev. Thomas E. Blantz, C.S.C. ’57, Professor of History Emeritus, University of Notre Dame

This book chronicles the fighting spirit of the sons of Notre Dame brought to World War II and the sacrifices they made to make our University—and country—proud.
Dolly Duffy '84, Executive Director, Notre Dame Alumni Association

May these intimate profiles of America’s Greatest Generation remind us of the enduring connection between Our Lady’s University and the honor of military service, embodied in our enduring motto: God, Country, Notre Dame.
Kenneth Heckel ’96, Sergeant John F. Crowley Director, University of Notre Dame Office of Military & Veterans Affairs

Students, athletes, clerics, and officer candidates—the indelible stories and ultimate sacrifices of these 'loyal sons' in World War II represent the best of Notre Dame’s bank of brothers and sisters.
Mike Cerre ’69, Emmy Award-winning correspondent and former U.S. Marine captain.

This book speaks to the shared values of those members of ‘The Fighting Irish,’ who put their lives on lived to exemplify ‘God, Country, Notre Dame.’ This is history but, more importantly, a timeless lesson for all of us. Honor them with lives worthy of their sacrifice.
Lt. Gen. Robert Noonan ’68, USA (Ret)

God, Country, Notre Dame’—those words have a special meaning for all who have attended Notre Dame and served in the military. For all those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice, those words ring true for their family and friends. In In Our Hearts Forever, John Hickey and David Sim have shared the stories of the 330 Notre Dame men who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. Thanks to their exhaustive research and their passion, the lives of those 330 true heroes can now be shared with all of us.
Lt. Col. Anthony “Tio” Totaro ’81, USAF (Ret)

A Review by Bob Gibbons ’69

Although statistics put me somewhere between being an avid (50+ books per year) and voracious (70+ books per year) reader—depending on the year—I never write full reviews of those I read. For In Our Hearts Forever, I’m going to make an exception.

A year or so ago, John Hickey described to me his latest in-process project: he and classmate Dave Sim were writing a book featuring the bios of the 330 Notre Dame servicemen who died in World War II. To be honest, I expected the result to be about as interesting as a slightly expanded version of the 1940 South Bend telephone directory. I mean, how exciting could John and Dave’s book be?

Now that it’s finished, I can tell you this: Oh, you have no idea! This is a terrific, informative, and enjoyable read; it’s filled not only with facts but with lots of human emotion. And it’s so well paced; every page has something surprising to share.

Much more than being a reference book, this is a keepsake; it will take you back to the country and the campus a generation (or more) before you arrived and give you a behind-the-scenes look at the forces that shaped and strengthened both Notre Dame and the world.

At its heart are the stories and pictures of the students and graduates who made the ultimate sacrifice. But their stories reveal much more than how those men died; in so many cases, they share the details of how they lived, the values they held, the friends, family, and achievements they left behind. In several more inclusive interviews, a Naval student, a submarine captain, and one of a pair of ROTC brothers provide in-depth memories of their time on campus and how their Notre Dame experience shaped their lives and their military careers.

Interwoven into these often-emotional tales are pictures of battlefields, cemeteries, and memorials; planes, and ships and other vehicles of war; images of recruiting posters and vintage advertisements; war bonds, v-mail, and USO shows; and copies of rare letters, including correspondence from the University establishing the naval programs on campus, Admiral Nimitz’s speech after receiving an honorary Notre Dame degree, and a soldier’s goodbye to his family as he lay dying in a New Guinea swamp far from home.

You may even find some personal connections. I discovered that Cadet Thomas McQuaid, who died in a training accident on March 21, 1944, graduated from the same high school I did in Rochester, New York, and Lieutenant Louis Bemish, who was killed in action in China on October 14, 1944, worked at Kodak before entering the military, just as I did several decades later.

There are so many rare photos—of Navy pilots being briefed aboard an aircraft carrier to attack military installations in Tokyo; doctors emerging from an underground surgery center in New Guinea; infantrymen lined up in the snow for their rations of chow in Belgium; a Navy chaplain celebrating mass on packing crates on Saipan Island; and holy communion being distributed on the beachhead during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

From the introduction by Fr. Tom Blantz, Notre Dame historian who puts the University’s contribution to World War II in context with its involvement in other major conflicts—to its biographical index that makes it easy to instantly locate any of the deceased—this is an exhaustively-researched, but very readable book that brings all the facets of World War II alive in so many ways, from so many different perspectives.

It will return you to campus and take you to battlefields across the globe—with a mix of bios, anecdotes, images, personal memories, and lots of surprising information. If it involved the University of Notre Dame, the war itself, or those who left campus to make the ultimate sacrifice—it’s in here. This is a remarkable book. There is none like it, anywhere.

In Our Hearts Forever belongs in a prominent place on your bookshelves.
